FAQ

Can I be seen for a check if I’m not a registered patient at The Doctors, Silverstream?

Absolutely! We’re an independent business operating from The Doctors, Silverstream. You don’t need to be a registered patient at The Doctors, Silverstream to be seen by us — everyone is welcome to book an appointment with us.

Does my insurance cover this?

In most cases, yes — many health insurance providers do cover skin cancer checks, biopsies, and minor procedures. However, you’ll need to pay at the time of your appointment and submit a claim directly to your insurer, as we don’t process insurance claims on your behalf.

We recommend checking with your insurance provider in advance to confirm what’s included in your policy.

Do I need to get undressed?

For the examination, you’ll be asked to remove your clothing down to your undergarments. A gown will be provided so you remain covered at all times.

Your comfort is our priority — if you’d like to adjust anything at any point, we’ll happily accommodate your needs.

Is Sinead a doctor?

No, I’m a Clinical Nurse Specialist — not a doctor.

However, I’ve completed the same dermoscopy exams recommended for doctors through the Australasian Skin Cancer College, passing with Distinction. I’m also a qualified Nurse Prescriber, which means I can prescribe most of the medications you may need to manage your skin concerns.

Can I book online?

Yes, absolutely! You can book your appointment online at any time that suits you.

Do I need Total Body Imaging (TBI)?

Not everyone NEEDS total body images. However, this is a great idea. The main reasons people should consider total body imaging is if you:

  • Have had a previous melanoma

  • Have a family history of melanoma

  • Have more than 100 moles

  • Or simply want the extra peace of mind of having a detailed baseline

Do I need a referral?

No, we are a self-referral process. Simply call or book online. No referral needed.

Do we offer surgery?

Yes, we do. A highly skilled specialist skin cancer doctor works with us once a month to perform skin cancer removals onsite. We also work closely with the team at The Doctors, Silverstream, who are excellent at performing skin cancer surgeries.

If needed, I can also refer you to your own GP, the local DHB, or a private skin cancer surgery provider — depending on your preferences and clinical needs

What if I need a biopsy?

If I find something that requires a biopsy, I can do this.

If I have enough time on the day, I will offer to do this at your assessment, however if not, this will require a separate appointment.

Do you treat all dermatology conditions?

My specialty is in skin cancer detection and management.

If you have other dermatology concerns — such as eczema, psoriasis, or acne — these are best assessed by a dermatologist. However, I’m happy to see you for a skin cancer check and can advise on next steps or refer you to the appropriate specialist if needed.

Do you accept Community Service Cards?

Because we are not a government funded service we do not receive any funding to support community services cards.

However to continue aiding accessible care for those that need it we offer a 15% discount to those that hold a CSC card for their skin assessments. This does not include biopsies or surgical procedures.
